Liquid roof renewal at Spire Hospital, Liverpool

Roofcare renewed the roof above the IT department at Spire’s Greenbank Road property using a reinforced liquid overcoating system. The approach reduced material handling and helped minimise disruption in a building with restricted roof access.

The challenge

Roofcare was appointed to survey the IT department roof and identify a suitable repair and renewal solution.

There was no open roof access directly over the department, making the movement of bulky roofing materials and equipment difficult. The operational area below also meant that keeping disruption and the duration of the works to a minimum were priorities.

A traditional strip-and-replace solution would have required considerably more replacement material to be brought to the roof, with old roofing materials removed from the work area. These access constraints were central to the choice of system.

The roofing solution

Roofcare selected a liquid overcoating system that allowed the existing roof surface to be prepared and renewed in place.

The specification covered cleaning and washing the roof, with drying around the box guttering before application. A hybrid primer and hybrid polymer base coat formed part of the system, followed by reinforcement matting and a hybrid polymer top coat.

The reinforcement included encapsulation of the coping stones, and the specification also incorporated a new termination detail.

Fixed scaffold access and scaffold handrails were included in the access provisions, together with a requirement for a site safety plan before work began.

The result

The reinforced liquid system provided a renewed waterproofing layer across the roof, with improved detailing at the coping stones and termination points.

Retaining the existing roof avoided extensive stripping and replacement. This reduced the quantity of materials transported to and from the roof and helped limit movement through the building around the IT department.

The liquid application method also supported a quicker renewal process, helping to minimise disruption to the operational area below.

For Spire’s Greenbank Road property, the choice of system reflected the practical demands of the building as well as the roof itself.
